An AI SDR, short for AI sales development representative, is software that tries to do an SDR's job on its own. It finds leads, writes to them, answers replies, and books meetings. A GTM engineer comes up in the same conversations, and some people treat the two as one job under a new name.
They are different layers. An AI SDR is a tool that runs part of the outbound motion. A GTM engineer is the person who builds the system that tool runs inside. Below is what the tools do, what to check before auto-replies run, and how we build the system around them.
What is an AI SDR, or an AI BDR?
An AI SDR is an agent that runs the outbound work an SDR does by hand. It takes a list of contacts, writes messages, sends sequences, reads the replies, and answers them. The more autonomous tools also qualify the reply and propose a meeting.
AI BDR is the same category under another name. Artisan, for example, calls its agent Ava an AI BDR.
Most AI SDR tools sit on top of a sequencer, the software that sends email and LinkedIn steps, or come built into one. The contact data often comes from somewhere else, such as Clay. We compare those two layers in Clay vs Claude.
AI SDR tools in our Sales Tools Database
Our Sales Tools Database tracks more than 1,100 sales and GTM tools. A group of them sells some version of an autonomous SDR. A few examples:
- Valley turns LinkedIn engagement and website visitors into meetings. It researches each person across 60+ data points and writes in the sender's voice.
- Artisan is built around Ava, which finds leads, enriches them from 22+ sources, writes sequences, handles replies, and books meetings.
- 11x sells AI workers that research leads, personalize outreach across channels, book meetings, and sync the CRM without a person at each step.
- AiSDR runs email and LinkedIn outreach on buyer intent signals and website visitor de-anonymization.
- Topo combines lead sourcing, enrichment, outreach, and meeting scheduling in one agent-run workflow.
- Salesforge is a sequencer for email and LinkedIn with an autonomous AI SDR layer on top.
The database also records each tool's agentic readiness: whether your own agents can drive it through an API or an MCP server. Most AI SDR tools score low. Valley, Artisan, AiSDR, and Topo list no public API, so the agent stays inside the vendor's interface. 11x has a documented API, with readiness rated limited. Salesforge ships a public API and an MCP server, so it can work as one node in a larger agent stack. Outside the AI SDR group, Amplemarket also ships an MCP server. Clay, which we use for enrichment, has both a public API and an MCP server. That is why Claude can drive Clay in the stacks we build, with the outreach tool as one more connector.
Pricing models vary just as much. Across these six tools, our database lists seat-based, usage-based, freemium, workspace-based, and custom pricing. Compare what each tool costs to run at your volume.
Agentic readiness also shapes the copy. An AI SDR you cannot connect to your own knowledge and rules writes from its defaults. Written down, that knowledge is what our GTM Brain piece calls the difference between plausible output at volume and your output.

Salesforge auto-replies: what to check first
Salesforge shows the split between a tool and a system clearly. Its reply agent answers prospects within minutes, and that speed matters. On outbound, more than 20 minutes is already far too long. A salesperson still looks after the replies it handles.
Salesforge also sells Agent Frank, its fully autonomous AI SDR, as a separate product. In our Salesforge review we called it not a day-one purchase, priced at a level that only makes sense once your sequences are proven. An AI SDR pointed at an unvalidated message just fails faster.
Before any auto-reply runs, check three things on the sequencer:
- The message works. Your own messaging gets replies before an agent sends it.
- Replies route correctly. Send to 10 to 20 contacts and confirm every reply lands where it should.
- Sending stops for the account. When one person at a company replies, the others at that company stop getting emails.
AI SDR vs GTM engineer: the same job under a new name?
No. A commenter in r/gtmengineering put it well: "Comparing gtm and sdr is like comparing a car to a tire." An AI SDR is a smaller part still. It runs the motion, and the GTM engineer owns the system around it.
We define a GTM engineer simply: someone who connects data, analyzes it, and activates it automatically, at scale, while understanding the business context. Choosing which AI SDR to use, if any, is part of that job. A GTM engineer who has launched outbound campaigns on 50 different tools knows how each one performed. A salesperson picking a tool spends hours that should go to closing deals.
The title does get stretched. Some job ads stack SDR, operator, and RevOps work into one "GTM engineer" title. Our piece on GTM engineer hiring mistakes shows how to tell the difference before you hire. GTM engineer in house or agency compares the two ways to get one.
A campaign now needs one GTM engineer to execute it and a GTM strategist for the idea. That strategist can be an SDR who talks to clients and knows what works. So the SDR job does not disappear into an AI SDR. The repetitive part moves to agents, and the judgment moves closer to strategy, as we cover in Will AI Replace Sales Jobs?
A tool and the person who builds around it
How to automate SDR workflows with AI: our agentic framework
We build SDR automation as an agentic system, with the agent as one part of it. Agentic GTM, in our definition, is the part of GTM engineering where the software acts on its own and you are accountable for what it did.
This is the order we build in:
1. Write the knowledge down. The offer, the ICP, the tone of voice, and the rules go into a GTM Brain, the knowledge an agent reads before it acts.
2. Build the list from the criteria. Clay and Claude source and enrich the accounts that match criteria a person set. Our guide to AI for sales prospecting covers this step.
3. Let agents draft and send. Agents write short messages and the sequencer sends them. A person should check what goes to the market.
4. Answer replies fast. A reply agent answers within minutes, and a salesperson looks after the replies it handles.
5. Hand the conversation to a person. The meeting and the relationship stay with people.
Before any workflow runs fully on its own, a person controls it. Our AI agent use cases piece shows the build order for research, copy, and reply agents. How to use AI in sales covers four workflows running at Vanderbuild or at our clients.
AI SDR vs human SDR: where each one fits
An AI SDR fits the repeatable parts of the job: sending, first replies, and moving data between tools. A person fits the parts that build trust: deciding who to contact, shaping the offer around a real problem, and running the conversation once someone is interested. Relationships stay with people, especially in B2B. We build trust and credibility with prospects ourselves.
If you sell to the 10, 20, or even 50 largest companies in one country, skip the AI SDR and work account by account.

FAQ
What is an AI SDR and how does it work?
An AI SDR is software that does an SDR's outbound tasks: it writes and sends messages, reads replies, answers them, and books meetings. It usually runs on a sequencer, and its contact data often comes from an enrichment tool such as Clay.
What is an AI BDR?
The same category under another name. Artisan, for example, calls its agent Ava an AI BDR, and Ava does the same jobs: finding leads, writing sequences, handling replies, and booking meetings.
What are the challenges of an AI SDR?
Generic messages and the need for a message that already works. Many AI SDR tools also have no public API, so your own agents cannot drive them.
Can I fully replace a human SDR with an AI SDR?
Not in our setup. Agents take the sending and the first replies. The offer, the criteria, and the relationship stay with people.
Is a GTM engineer the same as an AI SDR?
No. An AI SDR is a tool that runs outreach. A GTM engineer is the person who builds the system around it: data, rules, processes, and the choice of tools.
What features should I look for in AI SDR tools?
An API or MCP server your own agents can use, and reply routing that works on a live batch. Sending should also stop for a whole account once one person replies. Prove your message before any of it.
